About Us

Since 2019, Surem has been creating inclusive spaces that allow groups of people to connect with their past and continue celebrating their traditions, even when living far away from their hometowns. This work is particularly vital for immigrants and children of immigrants who have often never had the chance to visit their families' hometowns or learn about their customs and traditions firsthand.

One of the core aspects of Surem's work has been offering classes and educational programs that delve into the indigenous communities of different Mexican regions. Through these classes, participants gain a deeper understanding of the rich heritage and cultural practices specific to each region. Our presence and impact extend far beyond the classes and workshops we offer. By creating a sense of belonging and empowerment, Surem has helped to counteract the effects of cultural displacement and erasure.

We have strived to nurture a supportive community where individuals can reclaim and celebrate their cultural traditions with pride. The work of Surem has provided immigrants and children of immigrants with a space to bridge the gap between their ancestral heritage and their current lives in Austin.

Surem's current leadership is driven by Raquel Rivera, an Austin native and first-generation Latina college graduate. With a deep passion for her community and a desire to celebrate its roots and ancestors, Raquel serves as the Founder and Director of Surem. She holds a bachelor's degree in international business from the University of Texas, with a specific focus on the region of Mexico. Additionally, Raquel possesses another bachelor's degree in Mexican traditional dance from the esteemed "Escuela de la Danza Jaime Buentello Bazan" in Tepic, Nayarit. Her six years of dedicated study in this region have allowed her to gain an in-depth understanding of the cultural significance and nuances of Mexican traditional dance.

Frequent travels to various states in Mexico have granted Raquel the opportunity to establish cherished relationships with indigenous communities. These connections have enabled her to gain a profound appreciation for their customs, traditions, and artistic expressions. Raquel's interactions with these communities have greatly influenced her mission to preserve and promote indigenous culture through Surem.

Since founding Surem, Raquel has been strived in fostering strong relationships with other artistic companies in Austin, as well as the immigrant and Latino communities. Her dedication to creating spaces that celebrate and showcase diverse cultural heritage has resonated with many individuals seeking a deeper connection to their own roots. Through her leadership, Surem continues to thrive as a catalyst for embracing and honoring the cultural richness of the Hispanic community in Austin.
